Much needed improvements in Georgia’s water and sewer infrastructure will be made thanks to an influx of $144 million in federal stimulus funds. More than 16,000 projects totaling $6 billion have been submitted for consideration.

One project has been approved. The Madison Industrial Development Authority will receive $23 million.

“There’s a lot of need for water and sewer infrastructure in the state. We will approve projects until we run out of financing,” said Shane Hix, spokesman for the Georgia Environmental Facilities Authortiy (GEFA).

“This award marks a significant investment of EPA funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act in Georgia,” said Stan Meiburg, EPA Acting Regional Administrator in Georgia. “We are embarking on an unprecedented effort to create green jobs and protect human health and the environment.”

The infrastructure projects are expected to create an unspecified number of new jobs across the state.
