The longest-ever, environmentally friendly-made bridge in the USA has been officially opened.
The bridge in Logan County, Ohio, has been completely built from 100 percent recycled materials including detergent bottles and old car bumpers.
It has been constructed using Axion International’s cost effective STURXURE Bridges which are pre-engineered and pre-built using its patented formula – an industrial grade Recycled Structural Composite – which is fast becoming a top choice for municipalities, transportation authorities, rail companies and parks.
Struxure is 80 percent made from post-consumer plastics such as detergent bottles, shampoo bottles and milk jugs, and 20 percent from car bumpers and dashboards.
The patented processes were developed in conjunction with scientists at Rutgers University and transform recycled and industrial plastics into a myriad of structural products that are ideal replacements for traditional materials made from wood, steel or concrete.
Logan County Engineer Scott Coleman said the product was chosen for its expected life span of more than 50 years and the environmental benefits of using 100 percent recycled materials. The community in Logan County has a goal of being a zero-waste county by the 2020.

The 24.6-foot Onion Ditch Bridge is North America’s longest spanning bridge made from 100 percent recycled plastic materials and is only the second bridge of its kind on a public road, following one built using Struxure in York, Maine. The first one ever to be built was constructed in Scotland.
St Lawrence County Department of Highways in upstate New York has also bought Struxure to repair and restore bridges. Other tank and railroad bridges have been built using Struxure on domestic military bases supporting heavy loads such as tanks and railway locomotives.
The bridges can be installed in a day using local crews and equipment already on hand. They are long-lasting, durable and outperform traditional materials because they won’t rust, splinter, crumble, rot, absorb moisture or leach toxic chemicals into the environment.
Axion’s materials are completely impervious to infestation by insects, marine borers and other marine parasites.
