Hooray for recycling! According to Armstrong World Industries, its Ceiling Recycling Program has diverted over 100 million square feet of old ceiling tiles from landfills. Armstrong touts America’s first and longest running ceiling recycling program. Under the Ceiling Recycling Program, Armstrong pays the freight costs for shipping the old ceilings, using the raw materials to manufacture new ones.

The Ceiling Recycling Program was introduced by Armstrong World Industries in 1999. Over the last twelve years, the company has recycled over 50,000 tons of discarded mineral fiber ceiling tiles. "The Ceiling Recycling Program is designed to help reduce the impact on the environment by redirecting used ceiling tiles from landfills back to Armstrong," states Joann Davis-Brayman, Vice President of Marketing for Commercial Ceilings, in a statement. "This creates a closed loop manufacturing process and offers a valuable end to what typically would have been discarded."

Since recycling the ceiling tiles is as fast as tossing them in the dumpster, participation in the Ceiling Recycling Program does not have an effect on most construction schedules. Additionally, recycling the tiles is often a less expensive solution, as it eliminates landfill fees, container costs and transportation costs associated with sending the refuse to the landfill.

Companies and organization that participate in the Ceiling Recycling Program include Microsoft, Pfizer, Nike, Food Lion, National Security Agency, The World Bank, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Penn State University.
